Need to know |
President Trump revealed “the big one” yesterday, signing a memo calling for “fair and reciprocal” tariffs on all U.S. trading partners, even the nation’s closest allies. |
The plan: It calls for U.S. agencies to recalculate American tariffs on more than 17,000 products, possibly raising them to match tariffs from other countries in an effort to shrink the $1.2 trillion U.S. goods trade deficit. Read some of the finer details here. [Reuters] |

Trump's argument: Trump said the measures would equal the playing field for the U.S., suggesting that companies could build factories here, creating new jobs. He admitted the tariffs could “somewhat” raise prices but said they would “also go down.” [Time] |
Retailers' warning: In response to the memo, the National Retail Federation warned that the tariffs would disrupt supply chains and “erode household spending power” and noted that consumer sentiment was trending downward amid fears of a trade war. [The Hill] |

Why did Presidents’ Day become synonymous with sales, and which sales is it known for? |
Presidents’ Day is at the start of the year, so it’s a great time for retailers to refresh their stock. Mattresses, furniture and home goods are among the most popular categories. Case in point: You can get a Nectar memory foam mattress for $650, a Dyson vacuum for $250 and a Le Creuset Dutch oven for $300. |
